The best breakfast in Jersey City: made to order, from 7am

Ask around Jersey City for the best breakfast and you will get a dozen answers, most of them a paper bag handed over a counter before nine. We built Crepeccino to be the other thing: a room you sit down in, coffee that comes in a real cup, and eggs cooked the way you actually asked for them. This is our guide to breakfast in Jersey City — what to order, when to come, and why we do it the slow way.

We are on Summit Ave in Jersey City Heights, a short walk up from the Journal Square PATH. Breakfast and brunch run from 7:00 AM on weekdays and 8:00 AM on weekends, until 3:00 PM every day. After that the cafe stays open until midnight for crepes, espresso and matcha.

Made to order, not portioned off a sheet

The difference between a good breakfast and a warm one is attention. Every egg is cooked when you order it — scrambled, over easy, sunny side up — not scrambled into a pale sheet at six and scooped onto a plate. It is a small thing that decides everything.

That runs through the whole menu. Build-your-own savory toast on sourdough, white, whole wheat or rye, with your spread, greens, protein and eggs. Breakfast sandwiches built how you want them, on a bagel or a croissant, toasted to order. The Breakfast Sampler when you are properly hungry — two eggs, home fries, bacon, turkey bacon, beef sausage and a side of mini pancakes.

The sweet side is the part we built the place around

Crepes made to order is where Crepeccino started. Fettuccine crepes, mini pancakes, waffles — pick your sauces, fruit and crunch. The Crepeccino Burrito wraps the whole thing in a crepe with ice cream on the side. The Dubai crepe, pistachio and kataifi, has its own following — get extra strawberries, everyone eventually does. On a weekend the right order is one savory thing and one sweet thing between two people.

Coffee, matcha and cold drinks done properly

Espresso and lattes pulled to order, hot or iced. Ceremonial matcha, whisked, not scooped out of a sweetened powder. Build your own refresher on a lemonade or coconut water base with real fruit puree, syrups and fruit bites. Smoothies and shakes blended fresh. The coffee is not sitting on a burner since six.

When to come

Before the PATH. We open at 7:00 AM on weekdays, so you can eat properly and still make your train. Order the 586 Sandwich at the counter — single layer, built how you want, cut in half, chips in the bag — and walk out with it. More on that in our guide to breakfast near the Journal Square PATH.

Weekend brunch. Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 AM through 3:00 PM. No reservation, no list, no ninety minutes on a sidewalk. Early is genuinely the best hour up here — the Heights is still waking up. More in our guide to brunch in Jersey City Heights.

When you just want the sandwich. Everyone in this city has a bacon, egg and cheese opinion. Ours, and what separates a good one from a warm one, is its own guide.

Built with intention

We opened on Summit Avenue with one obsession — quality — and we have kept it a neighborhood place. No time limit on the table, nobody rushing you out, a team that knows the regulars. Breakfast is a community thing, or it should be, and that is the part we care about most.
